Dafoe made his film debut with an uncredited role in ''Heaven's Gate'' (1980). He is known for collaborating with auteur filmmakers like Paul Schrader, Abel Ferrara, Lars von Trier, Julian Schnabel, Wes Anderson, and Robert Eggers.
