Review by Choice Review

This beautifully illustrated, highly functional, and very informative guide to trees of Canada and the northern US is an outgrowth of the old Native Trees of Canada, first published 1917. However, Farrar has substantially reworked the original format into a real masterpiece. The photos are fantastic, and the drawings and range map are very nicely done (although this reviewer would have liked to see complete ranges of the species shown). The last fifth of the book contains very useful botanical keys, hardiness maps, and two wonderful, compelling sections. First, there is a description of the botanical authors from which the abbreviated authority names are derived. Having used scientific names for 30 years, this reviewer found these extremely fascinating. Second, there is a wonderful section on the meaning of scientific names for trees. Great stuff! In summary, a classy work. All levels. D. F. Karnosky Michigan Technological University
