Gr. 4-7. Fourteen short stories published in magazines during the early 1900s and two Christmas episodes from Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Windy Poplars make up this collection of Christmas tales. Although the sentimentality of the magazine stories can be a bit cloying, the best ones have a certain vigor as well. A collection of sixteen stories, including an excerpt from 'Anne of Green Gables', warmly celebrate the Christmas season, particularly the spirit of giving. Originally published in magazines at the turn of the century, the stories are sentimental and include gentle lessons, but they never come across as cloying or preachy. Christmas With Anne ($16.95; Sept. 1996; 214 pp.; 0-385-32288- 7): The title is a misnomer: There are two Christmas stories featuring Anne (the incident of Matthew and the puffed sleeves, and the surprise thawing of Miss Katherine Brooks); the other pieces have been assembled from magazine stories never published in the US. Readers will not feel cheated, however; Wilmshurst has selected tales as heartwarming as those set at Green Gables and beyond, and Montgomery's fans are always ready for any new story that can be mustered from this fabled author's pen. The drive from the station to Green Gables had always been a very pleasant part of Anne's weekends home. She always recalled her first drive home from Bright River with Matthew. That had been in spring and this was December, but everything along the road kept saying to her, "Do you remember?" The snow crisped under the runners; the music of the bells tinkled through the ranks of tall pointed firs, snow-laden. The White Way of Delight had little festoons of stars tangled in the trees. And on the last hill but one they saw the great gulf, white and mystical under the moon but not yet ice-bound. "There's just one spot on this road where I always feel suddenly... `I'm home ,'" said Anne. "It's the top of the next hill, where we'll see the lights of Green Gables.
