Review by Publisher's Weekly Review
A small boy follows a coded message to find his birthday surprise. PW noted that this book introduces ``pattern recognition, matching shapes, map-reading, and directional relationships in full-color pages that allow preschoolers to participate fully in the enticing adventure.'' In this small board book edition, Carle's pattern-recognition concept book, which contains pages with cutout shapes, benefits from the sturdy die-cut pages. However, the story (in which a note using shapes as rebuses leads the reader to Tim's birthday gift--a puppy) is still geared toward preschoolers, not babies.
