Gr. 3-6. These attractive and informative titles in the ASPCA Pet Care Guides for Kids series offer sound advice for first-time pet owners. For each animal, Evans describes physical characteristics, natural habitat, available breeds, and required diet. He gives tips on choosing an animal, explains the special equipment it requires, and makes suggestions for keeping a pet happy. After noting general behaviors for the species (guinea pigs prefer another guinea pig for companionship; cats do not need to live in groups), Evans describes how to recognize a pet's individual emotions, such as fear or anger. He emphasizes the importance of responsible pet ownership, periodic veterinary visits, and regular cleaning of pet equipment. Numerous full-color photographs and drawings (many of them labeled) are set off against the stark white background of the pages, creating a crisp and inviting layout. These books will make a popular addition to the pet shelf. The series offers two other titles, Puppy and Rabbit [BKL D 15 92]. ~--Kay Weisman

Double-page spreads dotted with color photographs and bits of text instruct the reader on proper pet care. Symbols are used to denote very important aspects as well as areas of care that require adult assistance. Although the books are lighthearted and fun, the information is not always specific enough, and the texts are sometimes inconsistent; nevertheless, the volumes are appealing. Ind.
