Ages 4-6. Another in the series featuring Angelina the mouse, this story finds her as a gymnast, one who perseveres despite a few setbacks. Angelina meets a new friend, Alice, who likes to do the same things she does-dancing, somersaults, and splits. But one day while Angelina is trying to perfect her not-too-perfect handstand, she falls on her bottom, prompting the kids to call her Angelina Tumbelina. When Alice laughs too and runs away, Angelina is devastated. Happily, the rip in their friendship is repaired, and Alice goes on to teach Angelina how to do a handstand, leading up to a wonderful gymnastics display at the village festival. Although the reason for Alice's defection is upsettingly left up in the air, this story has a sprightly real-life feel that young children will enjoy. The action bounces across the pages in gay pastel colors and, as in the earlier books, Angelina and friends are charming indeed. IC. Angelina meets a new friend in Angelina and Alice by Katharine Holabird, illus. by Helen Craig. After a grand beginning, the friends go through a bumpy patch when Alice sides with some older kids who mock Angelina's handstand abilities. Luckily, Alice comes through in the end. In a sixth book about her, Angelina (a mouse) suffers mortification when she falls off the swing at school, and even her new best friend, Alice, seems to desert her. But this is easily resolved when Alice chooses her as partner for a gymnastics exhibition at which the two have a great success. This slight (though not-unfamiliar) drama is the occasion for spritely, detailed illustrations, full of action, humor, and the charm of mice behaving like humans. Amusing, but not essential.
