Gr. K-2. There's a lot of character to the silly sheep in this silly tale that is simple enough to be manageable for children just beginning to read. ``Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep / on a hill that's / steep. Uh-oh! / The jeep won't go. Sheep leap / to push the jeep. Sheep shove. / Sheep grunt. / Sheep don't think / to look up front.'' Down they fall, jeep and all, into a muddy pool. Once extricated from there, they have a wreck and must leave their battered jeep in a heap, for sale cheap. The softly crayoned pictures are double-page spreads that deftly dramatize the antics. The animals themselves are full of expression, their earnest faces totally involved with the various emergencies they encounter. A highly agreeable farce. DMW. ``Beep! Beep! Sheep in a jeep on a hill that's steep. . . . Sheep leap to push the jeep. . . . '' In her first picture book, Shaw demonstrates a promising capaci ty for creating nonsense rhymes. Her sweetly daffy story describes the ex ploits of five feckless sheep who end up selling their jeep (cheap, of course). Vet eran illustrator Apple's whimsical por traits of the sheep bring the story to life. The effect is pleasing and lighthearted, with much appeal for very young read ers.
