Review by Booklist Review

This anecdotal novel features three Old West con men: Dude McQuinn, Coyote Walking, and Billy K. Lockhart. Their meal ticket is the fastest horse in the West, a nag called Judge Blair, who provides the trio with a comfortable living traveling from town to town setting up horse races. In a variation of the pool hustle, they make sure they lose the first race or two and then fleece the local rubes in a big-stakes finale. When Judge Blair is stolen, the three con men-not about to face an honest living-set out in pursuit. Along the way they encounter a double-dealing floozie, a third-rate circus, and a couple of hard cases intent on doing away with McQuinn. Enjoyable lightweight western fare. Once upon a time, a few thousand scotches ago, crooner Dean Martin could have played Dude McQuinn in the movie version. WL. [OCLC] 87-19853
