Review by Booklist Review

This latest volume in Brooklyn Botanic Garden's estimable 21st-Century Gardening series offers detailed information on how to create interesting combinations of flowers, foliage, and fruits in a shady spot in every season. Burrell explains how to work with low-light exposures, root competition, and other typical conditions. There is a list of 70 perennials that will grow in dry, moist, and wet shade. And because the shady border can--unlike its sunny counterpart--include complex combinations of wood as well as herbaceous plants, a list of 60 additional shrubs, flowering trees, and shade trees provides suggestions for companion plantings. There are color photographs and illustrations throughout this informative paperback. --George Cohen
