Review by Booklist Review

The pursuit of rock gardening encompasses many distinctive approaches to garden design. Bradley-Hole's gardening guide introduces plenty of promising possibilities, ranging from simple elements to enhance a backyard or front entryway, to exquisite garden settings that exemplify venerable traditions. Beautifully photographed vignettes show how easy it can be to create a gravel pathway, or select craggy rocks to function as garden ornaments. More complex planning might result in the construction of rock walls, a Zen garden of raked stones, or an expansive scree garden--simulating a mountainous habitat--planted with choice, colorful alpine specimens. Appealing illustrations are accompanied by technical advice that elaborates on the countless inspiring options, and plant lists and a directory suggest appropriate plant material for each given situation. --Alice Joyce
