Ages 3^-5. In this edition of Wells' classic starting-school story, first published in 1981, the pictures are all new, and they are as great as the orginal illustrations. There are more close-ups this time, the pages are larger, and there's more color, as well as some added border activity. The focus is still on facial expression and body language as Timothy the raccoon tries--unsuccessfully--to fit in at school and please his snooty, popular classmate, Claude. Then Timothy makes friends with Violet, another outsider, and they laugh so much at the in-crowd that they both get the hiccups. The story isn't at all dated, so libraries with worn hardback and paperback editions will be glad to know this fresh version is available. --Hazel Rochman

This small gem of a book ([cf2]Horn Book,[cf1] 1981) about new-school worries is now bigger and brighter, but it still hits just the right emotional chord, with a joyful endnote about making a new friend.
