Gr. 4^-6. Whether they're learning expert tricks like "Warp Drive" or just trying to attach the yo-yo to a string, kids will find a wealth of information and advice here. In the first chapters, the authors discuss the history and physics of yo-yos. There is also information about the structure and maintenance of various types of yo-yos, collecting and trading yo-yos, the National Yo-Yo Museum, and online sources of further information. The heart of the book, though, is its large section offering step-by-step directions for learning a variety of tricks, from the basic throws to expert moves, including impressive feats using two yo-yos at once. Many colorful photographs and drawings clearly illustrate the text. This sturdy, attractive paperback will be a useful guide for anyone intrigued by this popular toy. --Carolyn Phelan

Gr 4 Up-Thirty-five feats of increasing difficulty are illustrated in sharp, step-by-step photographs. Fixed axle and transaxle yo-yos are introduced, as are Imperial, butterfly, modern/modified, and novelty designs. Basic maintenance and string replacement are explained, and a few pages of yo-yo science and history are included. A few masters are mentioned. A more complete listing of related organizations can be found in John Ten Eyck's The Yo-Yo Book (Workman, 1998), but for instruction and range of tricks, this is an excellent choice that illustrates the joys of mastering the yo-yo.-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH (c) Copyright 2010.
