With 200 color photographs and black-and-white illustrations, this attractive book provides instructions on designing and constructing a Japanese-style garden. The authors begin by explaining the essence of this type of garden, including an overview of the influences that gave Japanese gardens their unique form, which first emerged in the first century A.D. Albright and Tinsdale describe six main garden styles, and then analyze the design process, focusing on such elements as stones, paths, fences, walls, gates, entrances, gravel, bridges, benches and seating areas, decking, and lighting. The authors discuss water features (ponds, waterfalls, and streams) in detail, recommend plants and flowers, trees and shrubs, and provide information on the maintenance of these beautiful gardens. --George Cohen
