Gr. 2^-3. These additions to the True Books--Animals series offer a lot of information despite the books' compact size. Cows looks at the history of their domestication, life on a dairy farm, and different milk products. The information about breeds is so sparse that it's more confusing than enlightening, and a chapter on India's sacred cows is interesting but seems to come out of nowhere. Because the book deals only with dairy cows, it doesn't have the political correctness problem that Sheep does: a picture of a little girl eating lamb for dinner on one of the early pages. The book covers the same general information as Cows, with the emphasis on the sheep's wool. Both books are attractively designed, with lots of crisp color photos and blocks of colored captions, and the back contains lists of books, Web sites, and "important words." Look for other titles in the Series Roundup in this issue. --Ilene Cooper
