Review by Booklist Review

The son of a lawman and the author of a long list of classic westerns, Hogan published his first novel in 1956, after listening to his father and his cronies swap yarns about the not-so-good old days. Here Hogan sets his story on the Vega, a ranching plain between Stonebreaker's Ridge and the Santa Clara Mountains. Hogan's hero is one-time bounty hunter Jim Ryan, who has returned to the territory and taken over his late father's Box K Ranch. When rancher Tom Strickland, father of Ann, the woman Ryan loves, seems unable to run his ranch properly, Ryan offers to buy him out. After accusing Ryan of wanting to steal the property from Ann, Strickland is gunned down, and Ryan is the likely suspect. He heads for Stonebreaker's Ridge, forced to prove his innocence or go back to living by the gun. A satisfying, no-frills western. --Budd Arthur
