Gr. 4^-6. This companion to The Care & Keeping of YOU: The Body Book for Girls (1998) aims at helping girls handle the amazing assortment of feelings that begin to emerge as they approach their teens. The first of the six chapters defines emotions ("reactions you have to things that happen around you") and offers some hints to help girls gauge their emotional strength. The second touches on how the brain and hormones are affected by emotions, as in the "fight or flight" response. Other chapters aid girls in becoming more aware of their inner voices and help them develop strategies for dealing with specific feelings, such as sadness, jealousy, and anger. The final chapter encourages girls to be positive about themselves and feel confident about their ability to deal with negative emotions when they do occur. The message is dispensed in a variety of ways; in addition to straight narrative, there are sidebars, colorful boxed insets, and dialogue bubbles, which often appear with cartoon-style illustrations. The design is appealing, and the content is a solid balance of information and advice. --Lauren Peterson

Gr 3-8-A well-done text on a topic that bears repeating. Madison explains that it's OK and perfectly normal to have feelings that are up one moment and crashing down the next. The easy-to-understand text guides readers through the physiology of dramatic, perhaps negative feelings to the final chapter of feeling positive. In between, readers are given an overview of how to identify particular emotions and what to do with them. Madison also devotes a chapter to "Help!" which has lots of practical tips for dealing with fear, anger, jealousy, etc. Particularly good is the message that readers are in charge of what they do about their emotions. Quotes in colorful boxes, a few multiple-choice questions, and cartoon illustrations on most pages make this title an appealing choice. Filled with good, reliable advice for readers dealing with the new surge of emotions, it will be a positive addition to adolescent-psychology shelves.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA (c) Copyright 2010.
