Many people are surprised to discover that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is more than just a little heartburn. It is often life altering and, if it advances to Barrett's esophagus or esophageal cancer, can even be life threatening. This book opens with a useful, accessibly written handbook describing the disease and its complications, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as advice regarding helpful lifestyle changes. The coverage is surprisingly thorough considering that this part of the book is a mere 97 pages. The second half is a cookbook full of low-fat, low-acid, yet delicious-sounding recipes that offer great alternatives to the bland diet GERD patients often experience. Many of the recipes are remakes of common dishes that are usually off limits because of taboo ingredients. A few recipes do seem a little questionable, e.g., a potato recipe featuring horseradish, a common reflux trigger. Overall, however, this is a nice addition to most collections.-KellyJo Houtz Griffin, Eatonville, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
