Review by Library Journal Review

A just-released thief, an escaped convict, and an alcoholic ex-gendarme combine their talents to pull off an elaborate jewel heist in Jean-Pierre Melville's (Bob le Flambeur) atmospheric thriller. French icons Alain Delon and Yves Montand star as stylized characters whose fates are sealed by genre expectations. While this interesting but somewhat overrated film noir deserves to be more widely seen than its stateside distribution allowed, the two-disc, extras-laden treatment seems a bit much.
