Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-5-These excellent titles provide brief overviews of key characteristics, information on life processes, and a discussion of habitat and environment. All open with an important warning to look at but not touch wild animals. The texts are divided into short chapters that begin with a question ("What Is an Amphibian?" "How Do Fish Grow Up Safely?" "How Old Do Insects Get?") that is answered in detail. Equivalent queries are presented in the same order in each book. Outlined boxes include interesting facts and words in bold are defined in the glossary. A one-page "Fact File" and information about classification are also included. The pleasing layouts feature numerous well-captioned color photographs, large type, and sufficient white space. Review by Horn Book Review

This book explores the life cycle of fish, discussing general characteristics, some familiar and some species-peculiar. Although the layout is busy, the photos are clear and the descriptions engaging. Other topics covered include hatching, stages of growth, defenses against predators, and reproduction. A fact file and reading list are appended. Glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
