Review by Library Journal Review

The artistically daring cinema that supplanted traditional Hollywood filmmaking in the late Sixties and most of the Seventies gets a much-deserved wet kiss in this fascinating documentary that aired on the Independent Film Channel in three hour-long episodes. Directed by screenwriter LaGravenese (The Fisher King) and the late director Demme (Blow), Decade eschews narration in favor of reflection from over two dozen participants-from both in front of and behind the camera-and film clips from many touchstones of that seminal era. Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Altman, William Friedkin, Peter Bogdanovich, Julie Christie, Roy Scheider, Sissy Spacek, and Ellen Burstyn are just a sample of the insightful contributors who discuss the heady freedom of those bygone times and how visionary artists took full advantage of it to fashion personal pictures influenced by European cinematic aesthetics and the prevailing counterculture erupting stateside. DVD extras include supplemental interview footage and filmmaker bios not shown on TV. Highly recommended for all collections.-Jeff Dick, Davenport, IA (c) Copyright 2010.
