PreS-Gr. 2. From the confetti- and bubble-strewn parade on the jacket to the day-in-the-life tale within, this picture book promises a silly story and delivers it with style. Drew A. Blank forgets all about Pajama Day until he arrives at school and finds everyone, including his teacher, strangely clad. Luckily, Drew's forgetfulness is rivaled only by his inventiveness. For bedroom slippers, he scrounges a mitten and a glove from the lost-and-found box; for a stuffed animal, he borrows the class gerbil; for a pillow, he inflates a balloon. Children will cheer Drew's unflappable attitude as well as his final triumph. Wickstrom's buoyant illustrations, ink drawings with watercolor washes, underscore the funny side of this sunny school story. Teachers reading this aloud must be prepared to answer the obvious question: When's Pajama Day? --Carolyn Phelan Copyright 2005 Booklist

In the third title begun with School Picture Day, Mrs. Sheperd's students put on their PJs and head to class for Pajama Day by Lynn Plourde, illus. by Thor Wickstrom-all except for Drew. But the boy's resourcefulness allows him to join in the fun. (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

K-Gr 2-The creators of School Picture Day (2002) and Teacher Appreciation Day (2003, both Dutton) have produced another winner. Despite numerous sticky notes applied to various parts of his body, Drew A. Blank has forgotten all of the things he was asked to bring to class for Pajama Day. Undaunted by his forgetfulness and not wanting to be the "odd man out," the boy uses his imagination and arrives at some inventive solutions to supply the needed items. He places mismatched mittens on his feet to serve as slippers and even dresses up the class guinea pig so he can participate in the teddy bear play. A tongue-in-cheek explanation for Drew's forgetfulness is offered at the end of the book when his mother picks him up from school and chauffeurs him on a frenzied round of activities that would interfere with anyone's concentration. As with the other two titles, part of the humor lies in the over-the-top improbability of the situation. Wickstrom's cheery watercolor cartoons, depicting a multiethnic class, add to the fun. On Pajama Day everyone arrives in PJs--everyone except Drew A. Blank, who always forgets things. Not wanting to be ""the odd man out,"" he rummages and stirs and clips until he ingeniously improvises all the things he has forgotten, including his snack and pillow. Once again Mrs. Shepherd+s class provides a welcome comical look (assisted by Wickstrom's cartoony illustrations) at our foibles. (c) Copyright 2010. Isn't there one in every class? All of Mrs. Shepherd's students show up on Pajama Day with pillows, plushies, and pj's--except for aptly named Drew A. Blank. Happily, Drew does bring along a full measure of ingenuity, and so rather than being "odd man out" all day, he quickly concocts alternative sleepwear from found materials, substitutes a balloon for a pillow, finds ways to participate in all the day's activities--and even becomes a local hero by waking his classmates from an inadvertently extended naptime before they miss their bus. But there's something else he's supposed to remember. . . . Wickstrom's relaxed cartoon scenes of smiling, bean-nosed figures visually underscore the casually inclusive atmosphere in Mrs. Shepherd's class; readers who have already met these lively children and their understanding teacher in School Picture Day (2002) and Teacher Appreciation Day (2003) will happily snuggle down for this new episode.
