Review by Publisher's Weekly Review

Mercer Mayer, creator of There's a Nightmare in My Closet and There's an Alligator Under My Bed now suggests There Are Monsters Everywhere. The boy narrator far prefers flying a kite outside with his dog: "There were monsters everywhere in my house," he begins, although they hide when Mom's around, and Dad insists there aren't any. Mayer's full-page and spot illustrations of finely outlined striped and polka-dotted beasts hiding by the trash cans and behind the shower curtain substantiate the boy's fears-until he takes karate classes and comes to his own defense. PreS-Gr 2-A boy laments the many monsters everywhere he goes-his mom and dad can't see them, but he just knows they're there. They lurk nearby when he takes the trash out in the evening, on the other side of the curtain when he's taking a shower, and all over his room at night. (Thank goodness they're afraid of ladders and he sleeps on the top bunk.) When he sees a sign for karate classes, he decides it's time to learn some fancy moves and overcome his fears. Though the story is hardly groundbreaking, it is an accurate and humorous reflection of childhood concerns. Mayer's trademark cartoon style is well suited to the bevy of silly and scary monsters that skulk around corners and cower in terror before a child gains confidence and takes charge.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia (c) Copyright 2010. In the spirit of Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet, this story captures a young boy's fears about the monsters that live in his house--despite his parents' insisting otherwise. Predictably, the boy masters his fear when he becomes proficient at karate and rids his home of monsters. The chunky characters, including monsters with braces and glasses, are trademark Mayer.
