Ages 3-5. Baker's trompe l'oeil style is shown off to good effect in these three concept books. ABC uses the alphabet cumulatively as a black-and-white rabbit, so realistic one can almost feel his fur, finds an apple, puts it on top of a box, and with a crayon starts drawing a picture of it. The use of verbs as well as nouns works well here, as does the story aspect, which will keep kids attentive. In Shape, a brown rabbit opens a cylinder decorated with triangle-covered paper and finds an assortment of balloons that blow up into different shapes. Perhaps the best book of the bunch is Color, in which a white rabbit falls into various pots of paint and shows youngsters how colors combine to form new hues. Fun, informative, and good value for the price. ~--Ilene Cooper

Each of these innovative concept books adds an extra dimension to the usual lessons about letters, colors, shapes and numbers. ABC , like so many other alphabet books, starts out with an apple, but then departs from the expected: the familiar fruit becomes the subject of Black and White Rabbit's painting in a wry and often very messy journey from A to Z. 1,2,3 combines a counting lesson with animal identification (and more art) as Gray Rabbit molds piles of colored clay into a variety of figures. In Shape , Brown Rabbit investigates the contents of a brightly wrapped package. White Rabbit, in Color , shows off the mixable properties of the primary colors when she immerses herself in three big tubs of paint. Sweet-natured humor infuses the clear, precise artwork, and Baker's talented bunnies are as winsome as can be. Ages 6 mos.-3 yrs. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Sleek illustrations set against a clarifying white background feature artistic rabbits, who, through sequences of related events, teach basic concepts. Of the four books, 'White Rabbit's Color Book' stands out, as it follows White Rabbit while she goes through some dramatic color changes by dunking herself in tubs of colored paint.
