Review by School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 1 Set to the familiar rhythm and cumulative rhyme pattern of "This Is the House That Jack Built," this beginning reader describes the sloppy cheese, spicy sausages, gloppy sauce, and floppy dough that are cooked into a pizza and enjoyed by dozens of mice, much to the cook's great disappointment. However, in order to make the rhyme work, the pizza is cooked in a "tray" rather than a pan, and the sausages are described as "choppy." Also, some of the words are not easy for beginning readers. Still, children will be carried along by the rhythm and the lively, colorful, and somewhat exaggerated illustrations. Kristina Aaronson, Bethel Elementary School Library, VT (c) Copyright 2010. This is the tray that Pat bought. This mouth-watering cumulative story, in the style of [cf2]The House That Jack Built[cf1], has pizza-maker Pat creating a pizza all cooked and chewy and spicy and sloppy and gloppy and gooey. Expressive, humorous illustrations, along with a silly, easy-to-read story, will make it hard for new readers to resist reading this one over and over again for the delicious fun of it.
