Gr. 2. Beth wants Molly to be her best friend, but she's worried--Molly has "guts," and Beth fears she doesn't, which seems to be proven when Beth stays at Molly's house. Molly swats away bugs and scampers across a stream on a log, and Beth hesistantly follows her. Yet when they get lost in a corn field, it is Beth who leads the way, and earns Molly's admiration. Short, easy sentences and an action-filled story line give this second-grade appeal. The color-pencil drawings showing Beth and Molly an interracial duo, match the spirted text. --Ilene Cooper
