Like the small, irrepressible canines in Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! (2006) by the same author-illustrator team, the curious, fuzzy charmers in this oversize picture book will tug at the hearts of children and adults alike. Once again, there's no real story--just a collection of appealing scenes in which kittens--busy, bouncy, and bold--explore their surroundings. Cheerful rhymes, with the title used as a satisfying refrain, are expanded on by Walker's acrylic artwork in soft-toned, thickly applied colors that have the look of sunny chalks. Though minimally detailed and simply shaped, the curious kitties leap and jump gleefully across spacious white backgrounds, their agile movements and curious expressions a comical reflection of the real thing. --Stephanie Zvirin Copyright 2007 Booklist

Kittens black and kittens white,/ Kittens spotted, kittens striped leap from the pages of Kittens! Kittens! Kittens! by Susan Meyers, illus. by David Walker, with all the exuberance of their earlier effort, Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! Author and artist have clearly observed these wee felines, as they capture their every movement in words and pictures. (Abrams, $15.95 32p ages 3-6 ISBN 978-0-8109-1218-2; Feb.) K-Gr 2-Using the same oversize format as Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! (Walker, 2005), Meyers and Walker cheerfully convey the playful spirit of kittens. The merrily rhyming text describes the animals exploring their world first as newborns, "Pouncing, bouncing, mewing...Busy, up-and-doing-." As they adjust to their new homes, they are "Chasing toys that skip and skitter,/Trying out their kitty litter." Growing older and bolder, the kittens are seen "Climbing curtains, shredding chairs,/Ganging up on teddy bears." Soft, muted colors give the pictures of tabbies, calicos, Siamese, and other domestic felines a warm and fuzzy feeling. Their expressive faces convey their sense of play, adventure, and curiosity as they hide in paper sacks, chase birds and mice, run atop a fence, jump from the washing machine into a laundry basket full of clothes, and cuddle with children. Youngsters will enjoy listening to the lively rhyme and shouting out the refrain, "Here and there and everywhere,/Kittens! Kittens! Kittens!" They will also enjoy poring over the cozy illustrations of the pets acting in ways that are very familiar to anyone who has ever enjoyed the company of a cat.-Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT (c) Copyright 2010. Felines frolic in verse and pictures. A surfeit of kittens in playful poses fills the first two pages, between snippets of poetry about their antics, and both the pets and the poetry continue to play through subsequent pages. Flower pots, yarn, a friendly dog, the roof, each other--nothing and no one is safe from their antics: "Chasing toys that skip and skitter, trying out their kitty litter." Eventually, they grow into calmer cats that protect the home from rodents and snuggle with their owner. Walker's soft-focus acrylics perfectly capture the warmth and gentleness of kittens, and cover the entire feline repertoire. Meyers's verse is similarly light and bouncy. Additionally, an abundance of white space in the design adds comforting calm. A sequel to the authors' Puppies! Puppies! Puppies! (2005) that's sure to delight.
