Chief Inspector Charlie Woodend's latest case begins when a gruesome discovery is made: a decapitated body hanging from a local bridge. When the victim's head is eventually found, further investigation reveals he was dead before his hanging. When a second body is found hanging from a crane at a local building site, Woodend fears a serial killer is on the loose. After days of evaluating evidence and following up leads, Woodend and his team learn that the murders are connected to a tragedy dating back seven years and involving the British army, several local men, and a Greek Cypriot. Well-developed characters, a touch of wry humor, deft writing, and plenty of unexpected twists make Spencer's Charlie Woodend series a top-notch British police procedural that belongs in all mystery collections worth their salt. --Emily Melton Copyright 2007 Booklist

Detective Chief Inspector Woodend (The Butcher Beyond) is investigating the murder of a man found hanging from a bridge. Then another man is hanged from a crane, and Woodend's team is dealing with two murders that may be connected. However, the links between the men are few. The characters of this outstanding series, set in 1966 Lancashire, England, are now as familiar to regular readers as old friends, and the stories are always well written and perfectly plotted. The ending is yet another cliffhanger, but we know that Woodend will overcome every adversity-at least we hope he will. For fans of British police procedurals. Spencer lives in Spain and also writes as Alan Rustage. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

DCI Charlie Woodend (Stone Killer, 2005, etc.) and his crew track a serial killer bent on displaying his handiwork in increasingly public venues. The first corpse, found floating, decapitated, in the Whitebridge canal, had originally been hung from seldom-used Locke Bridge so inconspicuously that Chief Constable Henry Marlowe announced the death as a suicide, seriously hampering Woodend's investigation. Still, as they met over pints at the Drum and Monkey, Woodend, his sergeant Monika Paniatowski, his former sergeant Bob Rutter and recently-promoted DC Colin Beresford all agree that Terry Pugh, with a good job and a baby on the way, didn't top himself. Reg Lewis's body, found dangling from a crane at a construction site, only confirms their certainty that someone wants to wipe out men in their late 20s leaving his victims for all to see. The connection isn't hard to find: Pugh and Lewis served in Cyprus together during the Cypriot uprising of the 1950s. But finding the connection isn't quite the same as stopping the killer--a lesson not lost on Monika, dispatched to the Mideast; Rutter, embarking on a dangerous relationship with unscrupulous reporter Liz Driver; and ever-persistent Woodend, caught in the political toils of his superiors. The intrigue grows but the detection wanes, making Spencer's latest entry feel like a transitional piece, a stopgap between reminiscences of past adventures and plans for future outings.
