Gr 3-6-This series offers leveled nonfiction on topics of high interest. The format is bright and busy with a concentric circle pattern repeated throughout. Illustrations are a combination of photographs, drawings, and, in Gladiator and Knight, period reproductions. Picture captions and page-by-page glossaries are printed on bright color backgrounds, and the texts are easy to follow. Animal Spies is similar in scope to other titles that focus on animal predators, including examples of how different animals use their senses to capture prey, find food, and avoid capture. Gladiator and Knight include history, training, legends, and nice tie-ins to modern-day gladiators and knights. These books have briefer texts than most other books on similar topics, making them accessible and appealing to reluctant readers.-Sharon R.
