Review by School Library Journal Review

Gr 4-8-This book is noteworthy for the way in which the activities are related to the information in the text. The opening stories about keepers' kids will engage readers. Details of personal experiences, such as a "flying Santa," women keepers, and life aboard a lightship, appear in boxed insets. While making a lighthouse cake or a sponge painting is more fun than scientific, other projects demonstrate the science behind these structures. Readers learn about the challenges of building them, inventions to make them more reliable, and how lighthouses function as historical relics today. The numerous black-and-white reproductions and photos are informational but often poorly reproduced.-Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library (c) Copyright 2010.
