Master paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago

This volume gives readers an overview of both the master paintings and major artistic periods represented in the Art Institute of Chicago's eminent painting collection. Like the 1988 edition, this revised and expanded edition begins with brief acknowledgments and an introduction by the author-for this edition, Cuno (president and Eloise W. Martin Director, Art Inst. of Chicago). The pictures and textual descriptions are divided into four sections: "European Paintings to 1900," "American Paintings to 1906," "Modernism to 1948," and "Modern and Contemporary to 2003." For those who already own one or more of the earlier editions, new editions of catalogs that highlight museums' collections rarely offer enough new visual or revised textual information to justify their purchase. Of the 149 pictures in this version, just 23 are reproductions of new acquisitions.
