Review by Library Journal Review

Harris (Botanica North America; Seasons of My Garden) believes that "being thrifty means being self-aware," and she applies that tenet to all aspects of modern domestic life. The gardening columnist for Canada's Globe and Mail, she includes a chapter for thrifty gardeners along with chapters for frugal fashionistas, foodies, and travelers. The straightforward advice is directed toward a natural, self-sufficient lifestyle; for example, Harris recommends cleaning methods and household habits that are fiscally and environmentally responsible, such as using vinegar and salt to kill weeds. She also shares tips from friends like Margaret Atwood. Readers in the United States may not be familiar with some of Harris's Canadian references, but the information she imparts will be universally welcome. Verdict This is not a guide to pinching pennies in a recession or living on a budget; instead, it offers a sustained way of thinking and acting no matter the economic climate. A solid addition.
