Ages 1^-3. Maisy the mouse, now seen on TV as well as in books, appears in several new volume. In Dresses Up, Maisy debates what to wear to Tallulah's costume party. She arrives at the party dressed as a zebra and announces, "Hello, everyone. It's party time!" In Gingerbread, children can follow Maisy through the simplified steps of making gingerbread cookies in the shapes of little animals. Two little animal friends, shaped just like the cookies, arrive to join her in eating the treats. Whether you call the stories slight or just short, they will please toddlers looking for a familiar character, a little action, and a happy ending. The bright-as-paint colors of Cousins' gouache palette are intensified by the bold, black lines that define the shapes of Maisy's world. Other titles in the set are Maisy's Bedtime (0-7636-0884-X) and Maisy's Pool (0-7636-0886-6). --Carolyn Phelan

PreS In the first story, Maisy tries to come up with a unique dress-up idea for Tallulah's costume party. All of her friends have already arrived when, "In comes a zebra. Oh, it's Maisy!" In the second title, the endearing white mouse gathers the ingredients she needs and makes gingerbread cookies. As she's cleaning up the dishes, two friends arrive "Just in time for an afternoon snack." The simple texts and bright illustrations done in primary colors make these offerings appropriate for very young audiences. Based on short adventures from the film series starring the cheerful mouse, these slight books lack the charm of Cousins's pop-up books.
