Gr 1-3-After Louis tells his favorite toy, Lamb, about Santa's bag of goodies, the stuffed animal sneaks downstairs on Christmas Eve to get a peek-and accidentally ends up in the big man's sack. Lamb chats and plays with all the other toys and tells them what to expect from their new owners, and it isn't until he is alone that he worries that he might end up with someone other than Louis. Lamb is a good-hearted protagonist, and the colorful, festive illustrations give this rather pedestrian tale a bit of saving charm.-Linda Israelson, Los Angeles Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Louis's favorite stuffed lamb climbs into Santa's bag to see what's there. He ends up spending an exciting evening telling toys what it will be like when they are beloved by children. Though there's no denying that Lamb, all bright-eyed and fluffy-furred (shown in out-of-focus illustrations) is adorable, the sentimental Christmas story suffers from too much sweetness. A stuffed lamb is the favorite toy of a little boy named Louis, who falls asleep quickly on Christmas Eve. Lamb waits up for Santa, falls into his bag and is whisked off in the sleigh with all the other toys awaiting delivery. Inside the giant sack, Lamb interacts with the new toys throughout the night, until he is the only toy left. Will he be given to some other child? No, Santa flies him home to be reunited with Louis on Christmas morning. The story is utterly predictable, and while some children will find Lamb sweet, others will think him babyish. The illustrator uses glowing strings of Christmas lights and a variety of dramatic perspectives to create a magical atmosphere, but he cannot add enough luster to make this one a keeper.
