PreS-K-It's a hot day, so Brownie and her cat, Pearl, decide to go for a dip in the little backyard pool. Wearing large sunglasses on their oversize heads, the two friends stick their toes in the water to cool off. The little girl giggles when Pearl falls in and gets drenched, but all is well as they lay on their towel to dry off. The bright, digitally rendered illustrations are cheerful, and the large, bold letters on white backgrounds suit the easy-reader text. However, this small slice-of-life is not much of a story. Little girl Brownie and her cat Pearl take a dip in the kiddie pool one hot summer day. When Pearl falls in, sunglasses and all, her fun is halted--but just temporarily. Rylant's text is lightly humorous and entirely accessible. Biggs's digital illustrations, with rounded images (sunglasses, beach ball, kiddie pool) and bright colors that will call to preschoolers, exude summertime fun. (c) Copyright 2011.
