Review by Library Journal Review

In 1875, the acclaimed Art Students League of New York began with the premise that life drawing should be the core of art instruction and soon began to collect works to inspire students. The treasure trove depicted here of late 19th- and early 20th-century drawings from teachers such as William Merritt Chase, Kenyon Cox, and Thomas Eakins was only recently rediscovered by the League. Part of the book is dedicated to observations and commentary by McElhinney and 15 other contemporary League instructors who work in a Classical or realist tradition, accompanied by key drawings by them and their students. This landmark volume is recommended for every serious art student and art collection. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
