Terminally cute minicreatures, all fashioned from crochet. And although authors Bui and Wan claim that this newest handicraft has swept Japan, it's hard to comprehend exactly how broad a universe this trend touches. The composite of two Japanese words meaning crocheted/knitted and stuffed doll, amigurumi could make holiday gifting a lot simpler and cheaper as it uses scraps of yarn to crochet the body, along with small amounts of stuffing, felt, embroidery yarn, and beads to finish the facial features. Thirty 5- to 10-inch dolls are hook-ready, each including color photographs, directions (in narrative and in chart formats), and occasional notes. Alliterative names match the designs, whether a funky fish, robo robot, or Pandora panda. The last chapter answers technical how-to questions; new to many needleworkers will be the explanations (and illustrations and diagrams) of the magic circle and amigurumi spirals.
