My name is A.J. and I hate school. The first sentence in the My Weirder School series echoes the opening lines of Gutman's My Weird School Daze and My Weird School series. In the new book, Miss Child leads a class tour of the zoo, where the students watch an elephant painting pictures, a gorilla using sometimes-rude sign language, and a child who has fallen into the lion enclosure. A cool, skateboarding girl joins the class, but most of the characters are the same, the book's tone is the same, and the illustration style is the same. So what is different about the new series? A. J. and his classmates, who were in second grade in the My Weird School series and on summer vacation in My Weird School Daze, are now starting third grade, and . . . well, actually, that is about it. Fans of the previous, hugely popular series will continue to enjoy the kids' banter, the lowbrow humor, and the antics of the wacky adults who run the show.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist
