A forager since childhood, Thayer (The Forager's Harvest) has written an authoritative, accessible book for identifying, harvesting, and eating wild plants. The 41 plants included are arranged in standard taxonomic order; each entry features detailed descriptions of the various species of the plant, its range and habitat, and extensive harvesting and preparation tips. Numerous beautiful, useful color photographs and drawings help with the identification. Thayer carefully distinguishes between the features of edible plants and poisonous plants they may resemble. Plant history, lore, and ecology and author anecdotes are woven throughout the inviting entries. VERDICT Clearly, foraging is a way of life for the author, and this excellent book is recommended for people living in the Midwest and Eastern United States who are interested in following in his footsteps.-Sue O'Brien, Downers Grove P.L., IL (c) Copyright 2010.
