Review by Library Journal Review

French psychologist de Hennezel (Intimate Death: How the Dying Teach Us How To Live) worked for ten years in the first palliative care unit in France and is now more well known as the therapist who helped the late French President Miterrand through the final days of his cancer. In this passionate book, de Hennezel takes on Western culture's obsession with youth. She sets the record straight about the realities of aging and helps readers learn to embrace the work of growing old. Helpful information covers common fears about growing old, keys to achieving happiness in old age, maintaining sensuality as we age, focusing on inner peace, and learning how to prepare for the end stages of life. VERDICT Drawing on literature, film, academia, and numerous interviews with seniors, de Hennezel combines anecdotes with psychological theory, philosophy, and research to present a refreshing take on everything that becoming older can offer. This will appeal to fans of Karl Pillemer's 30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's work. Highly recommended.-Dale Farris, Groves, TX (c) Copyright 2012. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
