Review by Booklist Review

Despite his postion as reigning king of mainstream superheroes, Bendis (Avengers, Ultimate Spider-Man) has maintained a steady foothold in his roots in tougher, indie comics. He is never more ably abetted in this than when he collaborates with Maleev. Maleev qualifies as perhaps the grittiest artist in comics, with photorealistic faces smudged by cinematic lighting and the foulness of their heinous deeds, and his art gives a grim weight to Bendis' noir storytelling, as it did to great effect in Alias and Daredevil. Scarlet is no exception, as a young woman runs afoul of police corruption and, with Batman-like commitment, begins exacting ruthless, bloody revenge. Having her share her deeds with the public via filmed messages and rallying a culture of support to herself allows Bendis to touch on something that has been long missing from comic books: the voice of angry, disenfranchised youth. In the dogged tradition of her antecedents, Scarlet is mad as hell and she's not going to take it anymore.--Karp, Jesse Copyright 2010 Booklist
