Ages 2^-5. Alborough's raucous tale in the folklore tradition begins with a little mouse squeaking for help. "Big Bro's coming! He's rough, he's tough, and he's big." Then he scampers off. This pattern of warning and retreat is repeated with frog, parrot, chimpanzee, and elephant. When Big Bro turns out literally to be mouse's big brother, the other creatures are not impressed. "He's tiny . . . He's teeny . . . He's a mouse." But in amusing childlike fashion, Big Bro proves just how rough and tough a mouse can be. Alborough, the author of Where's My Teddy? (1992) brings a delicate line to artwork that is big, bold and colorful. In addition to the engaging rhyme, rhythm, and repetition, preschoolers will relish the humor and suspense. PreSWord is out that rough, tough Big Bro is coming. The news spreads quickly through the jungle, sending all the animals into hiding. Finally, brave mouse volunteers to creep out and have a look, returning with the warning that he is indeed coming! When tiny mouse's older sibling appears, all the animals are humiliated. Nevertheless, the "Boo" that Big Bro roars manages to startle them all, and they concede to little mouse that he is indeed rough and tough. A young mouse alerts frog that 'Big Bro' is on the way, stretching his arms wide to show Big Bro's immensity. Frog in turn tells parrot, who tells chimpanzee, who tells elephant, each animal imagining the worst--which gets bigger and bigger. In the watercolor and ink illustrations that fill each page, bright colors and slightly goofy expressions help the reader smile knowingly from a safe distance.
