A catastrophic earthquake wrecks the Ring of Sacred Volcanoes, causing Faolan the wolf to guide some surviving wolves, an owl, and some bear cubs to a new home in the west--the Distant Blue. Confusing, portentous spiritual occurrences (Faolan has three souls) integrate awkwardly with the un-urgent plot and heavy-handed back matter.
