Review by Booklist Review
This appealing, large-format picture book introduces two little brown bears, born in Alaska in midwinter, and follows them for several years as they grow up and become independent. First seen as cubs closely guarded by their mother, the sisters drink her milk, eat grass, play fight, and nap under her watchful eye. After more than two years of teaching them how to hunt for food and protect themselves, their mother leaves. They hibernate together before going their separate ways to start families of their own. As in her previous books, Gorilla (2012) and Cheetah (2012), Eszterhas' excellent color photos offer exceptionally clear views of particular animals growing up. Closely aligned with the photos, the large-print text comments on the bears' activities and provides background information, while an appended page gives a few more facts about the species. Brown Bear and Lion are two new titles in this wildlife photographer's handsome Eye on the Wild series.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist
