Watterson's (The Very Easy Guide to Lace Knitting) latest focuses on Fair Isle knitting, also known as stranded color work. Like the other titles in the series, the book is organized into brief "lessons," each with a specific focus, and progresses from the very basics of color knitting (color choice, supplies, general knitting basics, chart reading) to more advanced techniques (the color work itself, including a variety of motifs). Projects keyed to each lesson are interspersed throughout the book. Surprisingly, the section on finishing makes no mention of steeking-a common Fair Isle finishing technique that could be very intimidating to beginning knitters. The appealing motif guide contains enough information for beginners to design their own projects. VERDICT Watterson's no-frills approach will help newer knitters gain confidence, but those looking for a more comprehensive guide to stranded color work may prefer Melissa Leapman's Mastering Color Knitting or Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting.
