Review by Booklist Review

Hip in the 1960s and 1970s, granny squares have regained some of their previous popularity, thanks in part to the resurgence of crocheting as a bona fide craft and to an increasing number of sophisticated designers. European crafters do retain a talent edge of sorts, as these three German-based crocheters show. The 26 granny patterns, incorporated in pillows and blankets as well as mug cozies and wrist warmers, take center stage, supported by complete how-to's for stitching 23 different types of squares. Begun in the center and then worked to a small-medium-large size, each description of a foundational granny, named for its appearance (e.g., lattice, heart, primrose), includes written and charted directions and a full-color picture of a finished sample. Similar treatment is given to the patterns, with four-color photographs of completed items, step-by-step instructions (with materials lists), indications of level of difficulty, and the occasional side tip (e.g., about a table runner's possible conversion into a winter shawl).--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist
