Review by Booklist Review
Australian needle-painter Burr (Long and Short Stitch Embroidery, 2006, etc.) adds another bow to her stitchery quiver with her fifth book exploring color in long- and short-stitch embroidery, which is more akin to art than to a craft, since Burr chooses, then manipulates color to create three-dimensional canvasses with shadows, shine, and lights (full and half). Much of the book is concerned with color swatches (using DMC thread samples), showing different variations on specific hues and Burr's own combinations (delightfully named Young Victoria, Australia, and the like). Projects won't disappoint, though they're geared to the experienced. Filled with amazing detail, each project description includes materials to use, tracing outline, preparation, stitch guide, thread key, and method, accompanied by acres of drawings and photographs. Visualize these particularly evocative titles: Camellia Japonica, Moroccan Plums, Little Green Bee-Eater (from Asia), and Sacred Kingfisher. Nature lives through the stitches.--Jacobs, Barbara Copyright 2010 Booklist
