The famed jazz trumpeter and composer and his illustrator partner Rogers whiz and snap back again after their delightful "Jazz ABZ" (2005) in this rollicking look at the complementary auditory delights of a child's world and an orchestra's worth of instruments. Just as the clock goes "tlick-tlock," so do the violinists' fingers go "tluuck, tluck, tlawck." Rogers's pictures recall the delightful Hirschfeld tribute in the "Rhapsody in Blue" segment of Disney's "Fantasia 2000" - kicky lines and outlines in a whirl of motion. "I huz- huzz- huzzz a kazoo when I gets the mood," the young narrator exults. Readers will huzz right along. MARVIN MAKES MUSIC By Marvin Hamlisch. Illustrated by Jim Madsen. 32 pp. Dial. $17.99. (Picture book; ages 4 to 8) This sweet and inspirational autobiographical tale is a requiem of sorts for its author, the late Emmy, Grammy and Oscar-winning composer, who died before his first picture book was published. But what a musical life he lived - and from such a tender age! Hamlisch's piano skills got him into Juilliard at the age of 6. The book, which includes a CD, concentrates on his early days: the itchy suits, the butterflies in the belly, the importance of wild dreams. Note to parents: Young Marvin never wanted to practice, either. TABBY McTAT The Musical Cat. By Julia Donaldson. Illustrated by Axel Scheffler. 32 pp. Arthur A. Levine Books. $16.99. (Picture book; ages 4 to 8) The team behind "Room on the Broom" pair up yet again in what has become a near-annual ritual of picture book perfection. "Tabby McTat was a busker's cat/With a meow that was loud and strong," it begins, and what follows is the story of a hard-up street musician, his cat and his cat's new wife. It is, in short, a story of friendship and true love, of loved ones parted and reunited, and the music that binds people (and pets) together. Impeccable rhythm and rhyme distinguish this particular tale, filled, as always, with Donaldson's exemplary humor and heart. THE EXTRAORDINARY MUSIC OF MR. IVES The True Story of a Famous American Composer. Written and illustrated by Joanne Stanbridge. 32 pp. Houghton Mifflin. $16.99. (Picture book; ages 5 to 9) When the Lusitania's whistle blows in port, many onlookers cover their ears. But Charles Ives - businessman by day, modernist composer by night - "grabs that big sound with both hands and shapes it into a song." Stanbridge writes well for young children, with a straightforward but absorbing text. The sweet watercolors draw the reader into a century-old world. While Ives's oeuvre and the Lusitania's fate may not be the most obvious fodder for a child-friendly tale, Stanbridge wisely depicts the sinking ship's youngest passengers being saved, and shows how tragedy can inspire art. SPIRIT SEEKER John Coltrane's Musical Journey. By Gary Golio. Illustrated by Rudy Gutierrez. 48 pp. Clarion Books/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. $17.99. (Picture book; ages 9 to 12) Golio's biography of the great jazz saxophonist begins, appropriately, in a church. It is 1938, North Carolina The preacher's grandson hears the Reverend's sermon about the healing power of the Spirit, words that will sustain him through both his father's and grandfather's deaths, and his own later struggles. Golio's portrayal travels into the depths of Coltrane's addiction, and onward to his spiritual reawakening. Gutierrez's wildly kinetic and occasionally fantastical paintings are appropriately heartfelt and groovy. PAMELA PAUL I Great Lives HARLEM'S LITTLE BLACKBIRD The Story of Florence Mills. By Renée Watson. Illustrated by Christian Robinson. 40 pp. Random House. $17.99. (Picture book; ages 4 to 8) Paris may have had its little sparrow, Edith Piaf, but Harlem had a blackbird. Born in 1896 to former slaves in Washington, D.C., Florence Mills grew up singing for friends and doing the cakewalk at local competitions. When she moved to New York, she sang and danced her way through the Harlem Renaissance, eventually appearing on Broadway. With bright, elaborately detailed illustrations, this picture book tells a fictionalized story based on the legend of how the Hindu god Ganesha transcribed the epic poem Mahabharata. Here Ganesha is just like any other kid except that he has an elephant's head, and vividly colored pictures show him cruising around on a magical mouse. He loves sweets (he is a bit chubby ), but when he bites down on the super jumbo jawbreaker laddoo, his tusk breaks off. He is furious and bitterly ashamed until he meets Vyasa the poet, who needs the tusk to write his poem, which is so long that all the pens in the world would break before it is done. So Ganesha helps the poet and uses his tusk to write the 100,000 verses of a story, which turns out to be so beautiful he even forgets about sweets. Blending computer graphics with traditional images, the intricate, stylized illustrations may be best suited for grade-schoolers, who will enjoy the story's turnarounds and focus on luscious sweets, and many will be ready for the classic Hindu myth.--Rochman, Hazel Copyright 2010 Booklist

Patel's artwork has a candy-colored palette that befits the subject matter, and he merges traditional Hindu iconography with decidedly contemporary influences: the book's eye-popping jewel tones, dots, and geometric patterns nod to the graphic design work of Saul Bass and Maurice Binder's title sequences for films like Charade and Dr. No. As a young god, Ganesha enjoys dancing, playing cricket, skipping rope, and-most of all-sweets. When Ganesha spies a tempting "super jumbo jawbreaker laddoo," his best friend, Mr. Mouse, warns him that it will surely break his tusk. "But I'm a god," Ganesha replies. "I'm invincible." Sure enough, his tusk breaks, leading to an encounter with the poet Vyasa, who persuades Ganesha to write the 100,000-verse long Mahabharata using his tusk as a pen. Though the story's ending fizzles, Patel and Hynes have created a fresh and comedic introduction to a Hindu legend, with a winning combination of both eye candy and actual candy. Ages 4-8. Elephant-headed god Ganesha, who gets around on a magical mouse, breaks his tooth on a super jumbo jawbreaker laddoo. This is upsetting until the poet Vyasa shows him that the tooth can be used to write out the 100,000 verses of the Mahabharata. VERDICT Deftly told with impish humor, the book is visually stunning with intricately stylized and patterned pictures in turquoise, pink, and gold on a dark blue ground.

Emphasizing Ganesha's playfulness, this story is a takeoff on one legend about the elephant-headed Hindu god. Ganesha, god of beginnings, is also a mischievous boy. Together with his sidekick, Mr. Mouse, he loves to eat candy. When he bites into "THE SUPER JUMBO JAWBREAKER LADDOO!," he breaks his tusk. He is so angry that he throws his tusk to the moon, but he accidentally hits an old man. Not just any old man, but Vyasa, the poet who has created the Mahabharata, the Sanskrit epic. In this tale, Vyasa suggests that Ganesha be his scribe and use his tusk as a pen. In the traditional story, Ganesha starts to write with a pen, and when it breaks, he uses his tusk as his writing implement. Here, he starts right off with his tusk. The unusual conditions of the legend (that Vyasa never stop reciting the poem and that Ganesha must understand the meaning of the epic) are here, but they are presented in an unusual double-page spread in which Mr. Mouse, as lawyer, sets up a contract. The illustrator is a Pixar animator, and the digital illustrations employ a confectioner's palette of hot pink and greenish blue, sometimes against dark backgrounds. Strong shapes and a mix of modern objects (Ganesha tries to use a stapler and tape dispenser to re-attach his tusk) with traditional designs add to the fun.
