In the second large-format book from the Everything Goes transportation series, Henry asks airplane-related questions and his parents provide the answers as they walk through an airport terminal, pass through security, find their gate, board the plane, and begin their flight. The colorful, cartoon-style illustrations offer young children plenty to observe and talk about, from the many aircraft in the skies above the building to the intriguing, amusing, and sometimes absurd details inside the bustling airport. Interspersing bite-size portions of information with diverting comments from other travelers, the conversational speech-balloon text provides a great mix of facts and fun. Consider multiple copies.--Phelan, Carolyn Copyright 2010 Booklist

In Biggss second transportation celebration (Everything Goes: On Land, rev. 11/11), Henry and his parents talk about air travel as they walk through a busy airport en route to their flight. After a bit of aviation history, their discussion (conveyed via speech bubbles) glides over modern airplanes, helicopters, hot-air balloons, and blimps, with brief stops to consider how different types are used. The cheery cartoon illustrations are chock-full of details, making each invitingly crowded spread a destination worth slowing down for. There are visual surprises on every page, including unexpected travelers (a pirate, an astronaut, a penguin) and hidden numerals from 1 to 100. The conversation continues as Henry and family pass through the airports security checkpoint (long lines, bare feet, and all), arrive at their gate, board their plane, find their seats, and experience takeoff and the beverage service, making this a handy what-to-expect introduction for young, less-frequent fliers. A couple of double-page scenic views will undoubtedly be highlights: the close-up of the cockpits instrument-control panel and two gatefold spreads that pull back to show activity on the ground and in the air. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this survey of flight. kitty flynn (c) Copyright 2012. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

For young fans of things with wings, another oversized visual riot from the creator of Everything Goes: On Land (2011). Following a departing family as it wends its way through a teeming airport, Biggs doesn't just confine himself to winged aircraft--covering instead the entire history of flight from the Wright Brothers on. Topical spreads are filled edge to edge with early airplanes, modern working planes of various designs, helicopters, gliders, blimps and balloons. Knowing just how much visual busyness to pack into each bright cartoon scene without turning it into a confusing jumble, he also offers alternate spreads a-bustle with activity. Passengers wheel luggage through a concourse, undress to various degrees at a security station ("NOPE" flashes the red sign over the gate as a peg-legged pirate tries to pass), board a jetliner (later seen in a cutaway view) and taxi out to the runway for a climactic double-gatefold takeoff. Along with identifying labels, viewers inclined to take closer looks will be rewarded by the sight of five rug rats leading a harried mom on a merry chase, birds with or without jaunty hats, at least one personal cameo of the artist and other diversions. Required reading for both plane-iacs and any first-time flier. (Informational picture book. 4-6)]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
