This guide endeavors to explain traditional Chinese brush painting to a western audience. An introductory chapter on the history of Chinese painting mentions its spiritual and symbolic significance. A section on materials describes the special brushes, inks, pigments, and papers favored by traditional Chinese artists. Sections on technique include directional diagrams of the brushwork motions and line sequences that comprise these paintings. The reader can follow exercises to produce paintings of trees, flowers, animals, landscapes, and more in the traditional style. VERDICT Intermediate and advanced painters in search of a new technique may enjoy Cross's (A Beginner's Guide to Chinese Painting) guide. (c) Copyright 2012.
