Review by Booklist Review
Like previous titles in the Explorers series, the busy pages of these new entries offer a variety of browsing options for even the most curious of readers. Big Cats focuses on the animals as hunters and fighters, although it also includes information on their habitat, family groupings, life cycle, ways of raising young, and conservation. Thanks to the many different potential paths through each book's pages, multiple reads can offer a few different experiences. Readers could follow the main text; the descriptive text related to the large, colorful photos and illustrations; or the numbered facts and captions at the top and bottom of each page. Alternately, you could follow the icons to related illustrations around the book, in the style of a treasure hunt. The unique More to Explore section at the end of the book provides additional information about items in the categories that the four icons represent. In Big Cats, they are Record Breakers, World, Cat Cousins, and Prey Animals. Like their predecessors, these Explorers books truly live up to their series name.--Aronin, Miriam Copyright 2010 Booklist

Action-filled spreads use photographs and digital illustrations to investigate the habits and habitats of "big cats," such as jaguars, leopards, lions, and tigers. Topics include cats' abilities, families, hunting, and threats to cat populations. The book's design replicates that of an app with color-coded buttons linking topics on different pages, allowing readers to trail concepts like prey and superlative feline feats between pages. Though not an exhaustive look at the diverse cat family, it's a satisfying interactive overview. Simultaneously available: Explorers: Ancient Egypt. Ages 7-10. (Mar.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. This book offers a broad look at ancient Egyptian civilization without delving too deeply into any single topic. Each two-page section explores a different aspect of Egyptian culture, often using a central illustration as the focal point with blocks of large, easy-to-read text and footnotes providing explanation. Icons intended to link common themes throughout the book can be more confusing than helpful. Ind. (c) Copyright 2013. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
